SEVEN-NINE STUDIOS
Seven-Nine studios were set up by Garry Barnes in 2010 specifically for the filming of THE SOVEREIGN TRILOGY. Garry was born in 1965 to Pat and George Barnes in Rainham, Essex. From a very early age Garry showed an avid interest in Science Fiction and dinosaurs, growing up with classic television programmes like DOCTOR WHO, THUNDERBIRDS, STAR TREK and UFO. Like many children in the late sixties and early seventies the Daleks held a special fascination and fear for Garry. The old myth of "hiding behind the sofa" had special significance for Garry after an unsettling experience with an Edwin Hall Dalek on Southend pier in the late sixties.
Garry attended Great Yarmouth Grammar school from 1976 to 1981 and left to find employment. Despite his continuing love of Science Fiction Garry settled into a 'normal' life, working over the years as a Nurse, Chef, bar manager and most recently in retail management. Garry continued his enthusiasm for all things Sci-Fi and in particular Daleks. He has an extensive collection of Product Enterprise and Character Options Daleks, which ironically led to the creation of THE SOVEREIGN TRILOGY.
"I had just watched the episode [of DOCTOR WHO] VICTORY OF THE DALEKS and found myself a bit disappointed with the new appearance of the Daleks" explains Garry. "I was a big fan of the Peter Cushing movies, I liked the idea of the colours, but the new size and shape of the Paradigm Daleks was just too... Fat. As usual on a Saturday I had some friends around to watch Doctor Who and I put on a DVD of the movie DALEK INVASION EARTH 2150AD, it was a unanimous verdict, the old Daleks were better." It was 17th April 2010; the idea for THE SOVEREIGN TRILOGY had been planted. "I was watching the movie and remembering how, as a child, I'd always been disappointed that you never got to see the bombardment of the Earth by meteors alluded to at the beginning of INVASION. I suddenly thought why not do it myself."
Over the next few months Garry worked on the story for REQUIEM OF THE DALEKS and assembled his 'cast' of characters. "The title came easily, Requiem, repose for the dead, it just followed from Remembrance [of the Daleks] which I wanted my film to do. Completing my collection of radio controlled Daleks was more difficult... and expensive." Garry researched different ways to bring his story to life, including CGI and stop motion, but decided to go with 30cm radio control Daleks. "I looked at some of the amazing CGI Daleks on YOUTUBE, the work of rdjackson87 and Fraust66 is amazing, but totally beyond my ability. I kept coming back to my radio controlled Daleks and the influences from my childhood. I guess I wanted half sixties DOCTOR WHO, half THUNDERBIRDS."
Garry set up SEVEN-NINE studios and began filming in February 2011. The first part of the trilogy was released commercially on DVD in May 2013, to good reviews. The sequel films are currently in post production and Garry hopes to release the second part on DVD later this year in time for the 50th Anniversary of DOCTOR WHO. Garry currently lives in Brighton with his partner of 15years and still works full time as a retail manager.
